(WXYZ) — Several fitness facilities and the League of Independent Fitness Facilities and Trainers have filed a lawsuit against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and MDHHs Director Robert Gordon over the closing of gyms during the COVID-19 crisis.
The league represents over 120 Michigan gyms and filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan.
The fitness industry was closed on March 16 along with other industries amid the stay-at-home order. Scott Erskine, the lead attorney, said the governor has not responded to letters sent by the industry that outline measures so gyms can reopen safely.
"My clients have stressed that they know how to open safely, and are committed to doing so. It is nonsensical that an industry that is in such a unique position to bolster the physical and emotional health of Michiganders remains completely closed, while many other sectors (including restaurants and bars) are permitted to open," he said in a release.
The governor's office is not commenting on pending litigation.
