(WXYZ) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's announcement extending the controversial stay-home order through May 28 was received with frustration from many, and support from some others.

On Thursday, during the governor's daily update on the state's response to the COVID-19 health crisis, she announced that the Stay Home, Stay Safe order will be extended as long as the state of emergency, which is set to end May 28. The new order also allows manufacturing, including the Big 3 automakers, to resume work on Monday May 11.
“This is good news for our state, our businesses, and our working families,” Whitmer said in a news release. “We’re not out of the woods yet, but this is an important step forward on our MI Safe Start plan to re-engage our economy safely and responsibly. As we continue to phase in sectors of our economy, I will keep working around the clock to ensure our businesses adopt best practices to protect workers from the spread of COVID-19. When we all keep doing our part, we can reduce the risk of a second wave and re-engage our economy safely and responsibly.”
The move to extend the controversial order requiring Michigan residents to stay home, as well as keep several local businesses closed, was met with a big response on social media.
Some 7 Action News viewers commented their displeasure, one saying that "if this keeps up there will be no businesses left." Another viewer saying, "the longer this goes on, the more and more people will lose homes, small businesses, their jobs."
Other Michiganders who support Whitmer's decision to extend the stay-home order, which was previously set to end May 15, say it makes sense to extend the order along with the state of emergency. One viewer responded in a Facebook comment on WXYZ saying, "if we were to keep the May 15th order, what was everyone going to be able to do... absolutely nothing much."
