OAKLAND COUNTY (WXYZ) — It's a terrible thought, but ice arenas in metro Detroit could play an important role if hospitals run out of space to store bodies.
The Oakland County medical examiner says it has brought in two big refrigerated trucks for extra storage capacity. But if that's not enough, they could turn to the ice arenas.
The rinks would provide a lot of space and can be kept at the proper temperature to store bodies until funeral arrangements are made.
It's an option of last resort that hopefully will not be needed. So far, nearly 400 people in Oakland County have died during the pandemic.
