DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit Police Department is honoring an officer who was killed in a hit-and-run incident last summer.

Inside DPD headquarters, there is a wall dedicated to fallen police officers. Today, a plaque dedicated to Detroit Police Officer Fadi Shukur will be unveiled.

Officer Shukur was assisting in crowd control around 2:30 a.m on Aug. 4 on Detroit's west side when he was hit by a car. Instead of stopping, the car that hit officer Shukur took off, leaving fellow officers on scene to rush Officer Shukur to the hospital in a patrol car.

He spent several days in the hospital before he died.
The 19-year-old man who hit Officer Shukur, Jonathan Cole, was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison last month.
Officer Shukur's legacy and service to Detroit will be honored with the plaque, hung among other officers who have also given their lives to protect others.
