DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police are looking into a break in at one of their own facilities, where the department keeps its horses for its mounted division. Fortunately, quick thinking helped catch one of the suspects.
The incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Two men tried to break into the Detroit Police Department's mounted patrol barn.
Officers describe a mysterious attempt to gain access to a mounted division horse barn that didn't work out for a couple of would-be burglars. The barn, located at 900 Merrill Plaisance, near Woodward and McNichols, is removed from any shops or homes in the Palmer Park area.
Police say it's closely monitored and with good reason. The valuable horses and their riding equipment could have been what the potential thieves were after, but so far detectives say they're not releasing specifics.
What is known is that a 52-year-old man was arrested, but his accomplice found a way to escape the scene on foot. The burglar who was arrested suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment before being locked up. Police didn't release information on how the suspect obtained those injuries, and say another break in attempt took place one night before.
The charges related to this arrest could come soon. As police search for that second burglar, so far they're not releasing a detailed description.
