The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged a Detroit father in connection to a fatal car crash that killed his 7-year-old daughter.

On July 15 around 2 a.m., on I-94 west of Inkster, 47-year-old Wilburt Dion Thomas was allegedly driving a stolen van under the influence of alcohol and drugs with his 7-year-old daughter in the vehicle.

Police say Thomas crashed the stolen van into a disabled car parked on the road's shoulder and hit a fence. Thomas then allowed the 7-year-old to walk away from the accident unsupervised to find help.

The girl was fatally hit by another vehicle. The female driver immediately called the police. The 7-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries, while Thomas was taken to a local hospital and later released.

Thomas was charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, child abuse and possession of alcohol and marijuana.

He will be arraigned in a Romulus district court Saturday morning.
