DETROIT (WXYZ) — A disturbing bulletin has been sent to Detroit firefighters union members by top executives, accusing a former treasurer of misusing assets.

Former union treasurer Verdine Day spent he entire career with the fire department, and recently retired as a highly respected union leader. That’s what some say makes this allegation so troubling.

“I can’t believe this for one second. Her reputation is beyond reproach and she’s loved by the members. There were 300-400 people at her retirement party” says retired Detroit firefighter Dave Parnell.

In part of the internal bulletin, the Union president writes: “We have recently learned that former treasurer Verdine Day misused union assets while serving as the treasurer of this local. As of yet, we have not determined the exact amount involved or the time period during which the misuse occurred.”

The bulletin also mentions a forensic audit now underway, as well as a promise to notify authorities. On Thursday, we called Day but got no answer. Union leaders also are not commenting.

“It’s a shame this is happening. But, I don’t see how this could be true and why they would be accusing someone so highly respected after they retired” says Parnell.

He points out, Day is also a former firefighter of the year and was chosen to serve on the union for her outstanding reputation.

The union is promising to be transparent with its members about their internal audit. We’ll stay on top of this to make sure the truth gets out.
