DETROIT (WXYZ) — Whether it’s boxing or skateboarding or even longboarding, Gilbert likes to stay active. He hopes to find a family match soon so he can be adopted and spend time with his new parent or parents.

“I'm 16, and I'm in 10th grade. Most of the time, I'm pretty quiet,” said Gilbert.

“I like skateboarding. I boxed since I was seven. So, I've been an MMA for a while. What got me into doing MMA is cause when I was a kid, believe it or not, I got bullied a lot,” he explained.

One of his favorite hobbies is longboarding.

“It's just like something to do. Just a hobby that most people can't do. So, if you look good doing it, then might as well,” he chuckled.

“I like reading and writing. I like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, the Aragon series and just like any other books that I ended up picking up,” said Gilbert.

He also is a creative kid who likes making music and writing songs.

“Like all the stuff that I've been through, it's just easier to write it down. Like, if I think of it, jot it down in the journal and then it'll piece that stuff together. It's mostly just about like all the hard things that I went through in my life. It makes me feel powerful because it shows that I have more control over what happened to me,” he said confidently.

But his overarching dream is to be adopted.

“Yeah. I'm looking for a family that I can settle down in. I mean, I don't really care just somewhere where I know that people are going to be there to have my back when I need them to most of all. I just need a place where, like, I know I can add trust and people,” said Gilbert.

He looks forward to talking and hanging out with his future family and asking for advice.

Gilbert has been waiting to be adopted since April of 2020.
