(WXYZ) — Former Macomb County Clerk Karen Spranger went in front of a judge Friday morning charged with felony theft.

Spranger has been on the run for several days after authorities said they wanted to talk with her about the theft case.

She was spotted at a Warren donut shop yesterday afternoon and arrested by police without incident.

On Wednesday, she was formally charged with theft of $1600 from the bank account of a woman she was helping.

Spranger was elected Macomb County Clerk in 2016 by only a few hundred votes. She was ousted last year when a judge determined she did not live where she claimed in her election filing.

The judge allowed her to be released on a personal bond.

Her sister hired her defense attorney this morning just before court. She plans to live with that sister while this case moves forward.

She’s due back in court on May 14 for a probable cause conference and May 21 for a preliminary exam. Both hearings are set for 8:45am.
