The new interim superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools says the embattled system is in desperate need of $50 million to keep teachers on the job and students in the classrooms. The deadline for getting the taxpayer money is April 8th, and state lawmakers are scheduled to go on Easter break in about two weeks. In an in-depth interview with Alycia Meriwether, I asked her if it would be irresponsible for the Michigan Legislature to take a recess without a temporary infusion of cash for the state’s largest public school system?
You can see my entire interview with Meriweather, a Detroiter and graduate of the city's public schools, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock on WXYZ-TV 7.
