It's time for the 19th annual Ford Freedom Award events at Detroit's Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Max M. Fisher Music Center.  The theme this year is "Talents that Unite! How African Americans Bring Diverse Communities Together Across America!"

The May 22-23 festivities will celebrate the achievements of Ford Freedom Award recipient  August Wilson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author.  His wife, Constanza Romero, will accept the honor, posthumously, on his behalf.  Also recognized will be Floyd Newman as the Ford Freedom Award Scholar.  Newman, now 82, is an award-winning animator and the first African American to be hired at Disney.

In a recent interview for WXYZ.com, Shawn H. Wilson of the Ford Motor Company Fund discussed with me the significance of these two men being saluted here in Detroit for their outstanding careers.
