The Syrian War & Russian airstrikes

Posted

Tension and troubling questions continue to mount between the United States and Russia over Russian military airstrikes over Syria.  Is the bombing more targeted at Washington-backed rebels or Islamic State (ISIS) fighters?

On this weekend’s Spotlight on the News program, Professor Saeed Khan, a Wayne State University Middle East expert, sits down with me to explain and analyze the conflict Syria has been embroiled in since 2011 as part of the Arab Spring.  Syria, a Middle East country currently suspended from the Arab League and closely aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin, is a member of the United Nations.  Since 2000, that nation has been led by President Bashar al-Assad.

I also talk with Kimberly Hassan, program coordinator for Detroit’s Arab American and Chaldean Council which has been receiving nearly 4,000 Syrian refugees a year.  She explains the services the refugees need and how average American citizens can help them.

The Syrian War is being closely monitored by U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry.
