DETROIT (WXYZ) — A suspect involved in an intense police chase through the city of Detroit has been charged with second degree murder among other things, according to a release from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Christopher Lee Cavin, 29, of Detroit, faces several charges after the June 3 chase, including second-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, two counts of fleeing and eluding police, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and five counts of felony firearm.
According to a release, Detroit police officers attempted to stop Cavin's car around 2 p.m. at Michigan Avenue and 31st Street, but Cavin did not pull over. He instead sped off in his vehicle, which had no license plate.
Officer's followed Cavin's car on side streets and main roads, which eventually led to the I-75 expressway where Michigan State Police joined the pursuit.
In the passenger seat was Kevin Daniel Pudick, 41, of Jackson, Michigan. Police say Cavin and Pudick were making gestures as if they were grabbing something near their feet during the pursuit.
Eventually, the suspect's car spun out of control. When officers attempted to arrest the suspects, Cavin allegedly began ramming police cars and allegedly drove his vehicle at a Detroit officer to pin him between the car and a concrete wall. That's when officers fired shots into the suspect's car, hitting Cavin and Pudick.
Both men were taken into custody and to a local hospital where Pudick died from his injuries.
Police later found two loaded handguns, cocaine and MDMA/Ecstasy inside the suspect's vehicle.
Cavin will be arraigned Thursday, June 6 in 36th District Court.
