Next Gen TV coming to metro Detroit with upgrades for viewers, drivers

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Leaders in media, tech and the auto industry have come from all over the world here to the Detroit area to discuss how info and important data can be shared in the future, both in the home and on the go in your vehicle.

It's the kind of upgrade that's considered a game changer for millions of people. It's offering customers here in metro Detroit and around the world looking to send and received data in the home and on the road, something futuristic to look forward to.

The new technology, known as Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0, is a brand new, over-the-air television standard.

The concept allows for people to get more services in their vehicles, such as fast software vehicle upgrades or being able to watch television while shopping online. Emergency alerts will also be included.

Currently, WMYD TV-20 is Detroit's first Next Gen TV station, a part of the 40 biggest TV markets launching services by 2020.

This means, a stronger signal tailor-made focused content, advertising and data delivery. Also, 4-K quality, immersive audio and blending of over the air TV and internet.

For automaker Honda, it's a way of appealing to customers wanting the newest and best technologies built into a vehicle.

There will be no charge to the current TV signal, and there's nothing to buy yet.

Eventually, this will come on newer TVs with a more advanced tuner and also be available on newer vehicles.

A Roku-like device will be offered at home to enjoy services as well.
