The Ohio State Highway Patrol has positively identified the body of the Melvindale man found along I-75 on Oct. 1.

According to troopers, an Ohio Department of Transportation worker discovered a sleeping bag with the remains of 39-year-old David D. Carter inside near the 149 milepost in Eagle Township.

The worker immediately called police.

Melvindale Police contacted the Ohio State Patrol after receiving a law enforcement bulletin. Police said the bulletin contained information matching the description of a missing person.

DNA testing later confirmed the match, according to troopers.

The investigation into Carter's death is ongoing.

Carter's family plans to hold a balloon release in his honor on Monday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. The vigil will take place at the Melvindale Practice Field in McGinty Park off Allen Road and Coleman Street.

Family asks attendees to bring red and white balloons and candles.
