Prominent Detroit developer Peter Cummings recently quoted the city’s new planning director as saying:
“The heart of Detroit is downtown but the soul of Detroit is in the neighborhoods!”
We agree 100-percent!
From west side to east side, the Motor City has always been defined by its neighborhoods and the people who live in them. On Saturday, August 6th, you can see and experience Detroit pride at its best! The 10th anniversary of ARISE Detroit Neighborhoods Day will be in full swing. Hundreds of churches, community groups, block clubs, businesses will take part. It’s a great way to shine the spotlight on what many residents do every day, year after year.
Lately, there’s been a lot of national attention on how many Detroit neighborhoods are being revived. But ARISE Detroit! began leading that charge when it wasn’t chic or news headlines. Their mission started with one corporate sponsor and is now supported by a smorgasbord of community partners.
There’s still time for volunteers to register for the cleanup and beautification projects, festivals and education events. We’ve posted the contact information on our wxyz.com website. If you’re excited about what’s happening in Detroit neighborhoods – old and new - take action and be a part of the change.
As ARISE! Detroit Director Luther Keith recently said:
“I have no issue with downtown and Midtown getting all the love they can get but…the neighborhoods have to come back for the whole city to come back.”
Absolutely true!
