We’re proud that Channel 7 Action News recently launched a special digital documentary called, "Beyond the Bullet." This riveting and emotional 27-minute presentation on WXYZ.com explores the pain, suffering and costs of gun violence in our community.
It goes beyond the TV headlines. It’s a unique journalistic project designed specifically for our website. The digital format allowed reporter Aaron Baskerville, producer Lisa Gass and videographer Johnny Sartin, the time they needed to tell their stories and present the facts. Through thoughtful and thorough reporting they show the impact of shootings on victims, families, taxpayers and society.
The digital documentary allows us to take viewers far beyond what we can present in a regular newscast. What really happens when the cameras leave?
We thank Detroit law enforcement leaders for their help on this groundbreaking reporting project shared exclusively on WXYZ.com. Last year, there were over 1280 shootings in the city alone. Two-hundred, forty-five of those were homicides! Overall violence and murders were down but it’s still far too much crime for Michigan’s largest city!
It’s a problem requiring community engagement, goals and outcomes. Please tell us what you think of our digital documentary, “Beyond the Bullet.” What other issues would like us to explore in this long form format? We look forward to your feedback.
