A suburban school district under fire for recent violence within its halls is pledging to take steps to prevent further tragedies.
“My concerns are for my daughter’s safety. Just having more people there and when a parent does come through with a concern they actually follow through with it,” one parent said.
Parents are speaking out over the troubling spike in violence from this past September when 16-year-old Fitzgerald High School student Dayana Gibson was stabbed to death at school.
In another case, three teens now face charges for an incident that occurred in early November. Cell phone video shows a teen kicked while on the ground and a school resource officer being injured.
School Principal Amanda Clor is now revealing a plan that maintains two police resource officers, as well as updated security doors and shatterproof windows. Clor is also touching on the violence of the past month.
“It could have been avoided. Students walked outside," Clor said. "Saw each other. Had an opportunity to turn around.”
Communication between students, parents and staff is being especially stressed with parents expected to keep track of dangerous behaviors on social media.
