It wasn't so long ago that a dog like Cody, a sick pitbull, would have died at Detroit Animal Control without anyone ever knowing Cody's loving nature. And without knowing Cody is a rare intersex dog.
But thanks to changes at Detroit's Animal Control that include transfers of some animals to non-profit rescues and shelters, Cody got the chance to survive heartworm and find a loving home with attorney Dana Nessel and her wife, Alanna Maguire.
Nessel has made headlines for being on the front lines in the fight for same-sex marriage.
And after Nessel's wife saw Cody, the couple decided it was time to add a dog to their family of two 12-year-old boys and two cats.
Cody is one of the many dogs Detroit Dog Rescue has secured from what is now called Detroit Animal Care and Control under the leadership of its new director, Melissa Miller.
And thanks to supporters of Detroit Dog Rescue, Cody and other rescue dogs are finding their way into their forever homes.
