DETROIT (WXYZ) — A 36-year-old civilian employee of the Detroit Police Department is recovering from a gunshot wound to the arm after he and his family were caught in the middle of a gun battle on Detroit's west side around 10:15 Wednesday night.

Police said the man was driving on West McNichols near Greenlawn when he heard gunshots, then realized that he'd been shot.

The victim managed to drive a half mile east to a restaurant where they called for help. His wife and their three-year-old daughter were also in the car but not injured.

"We thought it was a firecracker," said Ranoda Perry who lives with her family on Greenlawn.

But then she said they heard "rapid fire" and knew they were gunshots.

"I was scared," she said. "I hid behind the wall."

Anyone with information in the case is urged to call Detroit Police at 313-596-1240 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
