DETROIT (WXYZ) — The search is on for the man who carjacked Army veteran Daniel Chapman at gunpoint on Memorial Day.
"You don't want to offer too much resistance because your story could end worse," Chapman told 7 Action News. "Material things can always be replaced. They're not worth your life. I got two kids that I got to be worried about. So, I wasn't trying to take that gamble."
It happened around 12:45 a.m. Monday outside the Kenwood Liquor store on Woodward near Kenilworth in Detroit.
"When I was leaving out, that's when he approached me from behind," said Chapman.
The man, armed with a handgun, demanded Chapman hand over his money and keys. Chapman said he hesitated, but then realized his own leg was in a cast from a broken ankle, leaving him at a big disadvantage if he were to put up a fight.
"He saw me looking at his gun, he said don't think about it," Chapman says.
Detroit Police have released a photo of the suspect and surveillance video of the carjacking.
Chapman's stolen vehicle is a black 2011 GMC Yukon with a license plate of DZE8049.
Chapman, a factory worker, has been out of work for his leg injury and could not afford to keep up his car insurance so it lapsed. He's set up a GoFundMe for help in raising money to get another vehicle.
And if you have any information on the suspect or where the stolen vehicle is located, please call investigators with the Commercial Auto Theft Section of the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-2555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
Call the police," Chapman said. "Stay away from him because he's definitely brazen, you know, no concern for life. I felt he wanted to shoot me."
