DETROIT (WXYZ) — A Detroit mother is speaking out after an argument at a basketball court ended with her teenage son being hit with gunfire.

A day after he was shot in the ankle, her 13-year-old boy is recovering from surgery at Sinai Grace Hospital, as police continue to search for those responsible.

“He appears to be stable right now. He’s still in a lot of pain, but we’re monitoring the pain. He’s a bit shaken up about it,” says mother Shay Hill.

Her son is now recovering from surgery after a shooting Sunday at 6 pm. It happened near a school basketball court, at Puritan & Greenlawn.

“My son walked up to see what was happening in the crowd and got shot,” says Hill.

Police say there were at least 6 gunshots fired by one or two shooters. It was an apparent retaliation.

“It was a girl. How I’m hearing it, that called her big brother, or cousin, whoever. She was in a fight and got hit in the face or something by some other girl. There were 2 boys and they just started shooting in the crowd,” says Hill.

Police say they’re now looking for 2 young men. One is described as a black male, 6 foot tall, with an Afro hairstyle, wearing an orange and pink Nike jacket. The other is described as a black male, 5 foot 8, wearing a red and white jacket with blue jeans.

So far, it’s unknown if the shooting was captured on surveillance video.

Khyle’s mother says, “All the children need more structure. More guidance. Definitely God needs to be put back in the schools for these children that aren’t getting it at home.”

If you can help police identify the persons responsible for this shooting, please call Detroit Police right away.
