A Detroit bank robbery was foiled by an off-duty Wayne County sheriff’s deputy who used his quick thinking and language skills to help collar a criminal.
Now, that off-duty reserve deputy is being called a hero. He helped arrest a bank robber without ever pulling his gun.
It happened at the Chase Bank at Southfield and Warren on a day that started like any other, but then things quickly turned dangerous.
Reserve deputy Wally Beydoun was carrying his weapon when he stopped into the bank Saturday afternoon. His instincts took over quickly when he sensed something was wrong.
Speaking to a teller first in English then in Arabic, Beydoun says he was able to identify a man who claimed he was armed and demanded money.
Under Beydoun's careful watch, the bank robber was locked in a front entrance - with another customer.
The off-duty deputy told people the door was jammed until officers arrived.
Detroit police were there within minutes of the 911 call from a teller and were able to make a safe arrest.
