The State of the Union speech marked an amazing experience for a special guest from metro Detroit - a Syrian refugee invited to attend the event by President Barack Obama.

The man from Syria was a symbol of hope and an honored guest of the president.

President Obama welcomed Dr. Refaai Hamo, a Syrian scientist recently relocated to Oakland County with his family to avoid persecution.

Dr. Hamo fled Syria after a bombing killed several of his family members.

The president has said Dr. Hamo is part of what makes America great and that the civil engineer exemplifies the need to welcome Syrian refugees escaping civil war into our country through a safe and carefully vetted process.

We're told this has meant the world to Dr. Hamo. He can add Tuesday night to his remarkable list of experiences.
