DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — On Sunday, Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn held mass outside in a giant chapel built entirely of snow.
“This was kind of a spur of the moment thing,” said Father David Pellican.
The idea was put together to give students at Divine Child School a chance to come together for a fun project. The students started in shifts during the week, and put the finishing touches on the chapel before mass on Sunday.
“We’ve had to cancel so much for the kids lately just because of COVID and safety issues we were like, ‘we need to do something,’” Fr. Pelican said. “We have like 850 students in the high school, 500 in the elementary school, and we used quite a few of them.”
The snow chapel also gave the parishioners a chance to hold a socially distant mass outdoors, and brave the cold to worship together.
“Everybody in the church has come out in droves to help us,” Fr. Pelican said. “We’ve had neighbors coming by just nonstop all day, taking pictures and what not.”
