DETROIT (WXYZ) — A suspect who was allegedly involved in a drive-by shooting that injured four teens between the ages of 15 and 17 on Sunday, was killed Thursday in an officer-involved shooting on Detroit's east side.

The officer-involved shooting happened Thursday afternoon, after police with Detroit's 9th Precinct and the Gang Intelligence Unit were surveilling an area for a possible suspect in the Sunday quadruple shooting.

The suspect was seen by officers entering a vehicle with two other men. Officers then attempted a traffic stop, which led to a short vehicle pursuit that lasted about 10 minutes, according to Chief James Craig.

The pursuit came to an end in the area of McKinney and Whittier when the suspect's vehicle crashed into a pole and all three suspects inside attempted to flee on foot. An officer saw one suspect with a weapon in hand, and in fear for his own safety, fired one shot killing the suspect, Craig said.

The other two suspects were taken into police custody.

During a press briefing following the officer-involved shooting, Chief Craig said that two of the three suspects were involved in the shooting of four teens earlier in the week. The suspect who was shot and killed was one of those suspects.

The suspect shot and killed is also believed to be in connection to other shootings across metro Detroit, including a shooting in Eastpointe, the chief said.

No shots were fired at the officers. This is an ongoing investigation.

This is another officer-involved shooting in the City of Detroit that happened in a span of two weeks, the other happening on July 10, when officers arrested a man on an outstanding drug-related warrant. Another man standing nearby pulled out a gun and started shooting at officers. In that shooting and this one, Chief Craig says his officers did the right thing.

“Our officers are going in direct harms way," Chief Craig said. "We’re talking about suspects not even days ago, shot teenagers at a party not far from this location. So they were doing what we asked them to do and they did a great job in doing so."

Chief Craig said two of the four teens shot Sunday were in critical condition. One of the teens who were on life support has since died.
