The University of Detroit Mercy has named University of Michigan assistant Bacari Alexander as its new head basketball coach.
Alexander, 39, has spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at U-M under John Beilein.
A Detroit native, Alexander also played basketball at Detroit Mercy and coached there for six seasons from 2001 - 2007. He helped the Titans make back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 1998 and 1999, and won two Midwestern Collegiate Conference championships.
"My family and I are excited to rejoin the Titan family," Alexander said in a release. "Over the years, I have been able to work with a number of great mentors and coaches that have fully prepared me for this opportunity."
According to the Free Press, Alexander is expected to have a seven-year contract paying between $450,000 and $475,000 per year.
Alexander is the second U-M assistant to leave the team this season. Earlier this month, Milwaukee announced they would be hiring LaVall Jordan, who also spent six seasons with the Wolverines.
"Bacari is such a perfect fit for Detroit. He is an extremely talented basketball coach and is 100 percent ready to lead the Detroit basketball program now and into the future," Beilein said.
