(WXYZ) — Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said no voter intimidation will be tolerated at the polls in the upcoming November election.
Last week, Benson announced a ban on the open carry of firearms on Election Day in polling places, clerk's offices and and absent voter counting boards.
Some sheriffs and local law enforcement say they do not plan to enforce the ban.In response, Benson said Michigan State Police will enforce the ban anywhere law enforcement is able to do so.
Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy said “to say that state police are going to do this is ludicrous.”
Murphy called the ban a “political stunt.”
Benson said the ban was put in place due to concerns from voters across the state, as well as clerks.
Benson said clerks she spoke to were "relieved" to have the "burden of threats and harassment" taken away.
