This is a great time to come home to Detroit! That’s what’s happening this week everywhere you look. Amazon announced its opening a corporate office and technology hub downtown. Lear Corporation is buying a building to set up a new innovation and design center. Henry Ford revealed plans for a multi-million cancer center in Midtown. Now, add to this more than 170 “Detroit expats” returning to the Motor City this week.
These aren’t just average tourists. This is a group of invitation-only, highly successful former Detroiters who are in a position to give something back to the town where they got their start.
The Detroit Homecoming, which began last year as the brainchild of retired Fortune publisher Jim Hayes, is back. But the bar has been raised considerably for year number two. This movement and vision has been skillfully guided by Crain’s Detroit Business. WXYZ is proud to be the broadcast partner for the Detroit Homecoming.
Last year’s event can be directly linked to $230 million of new investments from 30 different initiatives. We hope similar results will emerge from this year’s 3-day conference that will focus on the power of sports and Detroit’s changing narrative.
With an all-star line-up of top business leaders, our town is quickly making believers out of doubters. A key part of Detroit’s revitalization will depend on ideas and action from homegrown “Motown expats”.
