The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) suspended the medical license of Dr. Kenneth Chun of Bloomfield Hills.

LARA filed an administrative complaint that accuses Dr. Chun of overprescribing commonly abused controlled substances like methadone, alprazolam and hydrocodone for other than lawful medical purposes.

The complaint alleges Dr. Chun routinely prescribed medication, including addictive opioids, to patients without any medical justification.

LARA's investigation linked more than 26,000 prescriptions to Dr. Chun in 2015.

The state says data from the Michigan Automated Prescription System revealed he was the second highest prescriber of all controlled substances in Michigan and the number one prescriber of methadone.

"As part of the state's comprehensive effort to fight the opioid epidemic, LARA has taken aggressive steps to prevent our medical professionals from unlawfully prescribing controlled substances," says LARA Director Shelly Edgerton. "We will continue to take strong regulatory actions against any licensed practitioner who violates the law."
