DETROIT (WXYZ) -- Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski returned home Friday to face his hometown team at Joe Louis Arena.

The Grosse Pointe native said he was excited to face the Red Wings, especially former Michigan teammate Dylan Larkin.

"I think all of it's pretty excited," Werenski told reporters before the game. "I've got a lot of family and friends here, I'm playing against a good buddy of mine, it's my hometown team I've always grown up watching, so this whole thing is pretty cool."

Werenski also reflected on his memories of Joe Louis Arena in the building's final season.

"I'll definitely miss it. I've seen so many games here, come to so many playoff games. A lot of my childhood memories with hockey have come in this building. Just to think it's the last year and I get to play here, it's pretty awesome."
