Parking on Opening Day: Here's how to avoid the tow traps

Posted

When it comes to parking, there are meters and garages but on Opening Day, thousands of people will be leaning on the lots.

The city says people often make the mistake of leaving their vehicles in unauthorized parking lots, and get towed, so how do you avoid the traps?

The city says visitors should look for the signs, quite literally.

If it’s a legitimate operation, it should have a sign, very similar to a license plate, with an expiration date.

The lot should also have an actual paper license, available upon request, and each attendant should be wearing an ID card.

The city says visitors should avoid parking lots that don’t have a sign with the prices clearly quoted, to make sure you’re not getting pulled into a place where you can’t legally be.

And, watch out for the attendants with flags luring you in, an activity he says is technically illegal.

Worried about someone up-charging, despite what the sign says. Visitors should know, they’re not allowed to raise the price. Any increase has to be pre-approved by the city and clearly posted.

If the meter is preferred, use the Park Detroit app to "pay as you go," and just make sure you're avoiding those no parking signs.

MSP says those areas will be strictly enforced.
