A German student has invented an airbag-like device for cellphones, according to Business Insider

The case detects when the phone is falling and deploys curved springs, breaking the fall and not your screen.

Philip Frenzel has already patented his 'active dampening' phone case technology, but the current model is just a prototype. The technology allows the case to sense when the phone is in free-fall and eject springs 'dampening' the impact.

Though Business Insider suggests the prototype may need more work:

While the case seems like a good solution for drops on flat surfaces, it doesn't look like it would prevent scratches or cracks if the phone fell onto a jagged edge or anything that is uneven.

The case hasn't hit the market just yet, but it's a pretty neat idea.
