Two investigative reports by WXYZ-TV in Detroit have been honored with Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association. The RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news.
"Problems in Probate" was honored in the investigative reporting category, and "The Protected Predator" was honored in the continuing coverage category.
"Problems in Probate," reported by 7 Action News Investigator Heather Catallo, was a year-long investigation that prompted an FBI raid, a sheriff's department criminal probe, the termination of public officials and changed Michigan law.
"The Protected Predator," reported by 7 Action News Investigator Ross Jones, documented Michigan State University's slow response to victims of child molester Larry Nassar. The reports, spanning more than a year, chronicled the stories of abuse long before they became national news.
"We are honored to receive two prestigious Regional Murrow Awards and to have our team's work recognized for excellence in investigative journalism," said WXYZ and WMYD Vice President and General Manager, Mike Murri. "Being strong advocates for our community is at the core of our mission and we're proud of the positive change that has resulted from our team's investigative journalism efforts."
The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Regional winners will advance to the National Murrow Award competition.
