Three Westland police officers helped rescue ducklings trapped inside a sewer with the help of the Westland Department of Public Services.

The department received the call about 8:30 a.m. Monday saying a family of ducklings was trapped in the sewer. In all, there were four trapped.

With the help of the DPS, officers Boljesic and Johns, and Lt. Serrano, freed the ducklings as the worried mother circled overhead.

Officer Johns used two tennis rackets the caller had with her to get the ducklings out, but he couldn't reach them all. That's when the DPS gave a large net to save the last duckling.

When they noticed that the mother duck was too hesitant to land, Officer Boljesic walked south of Ford Rd. and left the ducklings. When the mother saw there were no people around, she landed and reunited with the ducklings before leaving.
