WXYZ — Carl’s Golfland is known for its quirky ads, but with the game of golf on hold, they quickly adapted to understanding their space in the world at the moment. The golf equipment is a staple in our state, and President Carl Rose Jr. quickly realized he wanted to do more.

“I sat with my kids the other night and watched ‘Pay it Forward’ and you think about things like that and you know what? I’m going to try to make a difference and that’s where it all started with me, I wanted to make a difference if I could,” Rose Jr. said.

So he came up with the idea to ’shank’ this virus. Creating shirts with that motto and using that hashtag on social media, took off on social media as golfers around the country started chipping in their support. An 18 dollar shirt can help beat COVID-19. He’s already surpassed $25,000 in donations.

“I’m not done and I hope the shank this virus saying is fun, first and foremost to people, I’ve already seen things where people are out in their yard, doing different things and having fun, sharing good will,” Rose Jr. added.

Today, the donation went to work. Mitch Albom founded SAY Detroit to help Detroiters when they’re down, and give them a boost. He taking this donation and throwing it right back into the fight against the virus.

“We created under SAY Detroit, a ’Detriot beats COVID-19!’ project, With an exclamation point, because are going to beat COVID-19 and all of the money that’s coming in including Carl’s generous gift there will go right into that project, which goes right back out again,” SAY Detroit founder Mitch Albom said.

”We're making a difference for our community, to SAY Detroit and some of these other front line people who are out there battling for us everyday,” Rose Jr. added.
