Turning 13 is tough enough. Add in a divorce, a cross country move and the girl next door, and it's nearly impossible. Thistle Rose Academy of Arts based in Farmington Hills is working with Thistle Rose Young Artists to perform the hit family-friendly musical, for ONE NIGHT ONLY. Thursday, September 28th at the historic Senate Theatre in Detroit. Tickets are on sale right now at www.thistleroseacademy.org.
With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, (Parade, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County) 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out!
“From not knowing which group you belong to at school, to having a crush on someone, or dealing with an uncomfortable home life situation, I’m pretty sure everyone can relate to the feelings touched upon in 13," says Amy Lauter, Producer of 13. "The book and the music are spectacular, with just the right combination of humor and heart!”
This is the inaugural show for Thistle Rose Young Artists. 13 focuses on Evan Goldman, the victim of his parents' divorce, who has recently been plucked from his fast-paced, preteen life in "The Big Apple" and plopped into a sleepy little town in Indiana.
Evan quickly learns that he needs to figure out a way to fit in with other middle schoolers. . Choosing the right group – Geek, Poser, Jock, Beauty Queen, Wannabe – is a key decision toward your place in the world. As he moves through a world of cool kids, nerds, jocks and cheerleaders, as well as first kisses and heartbreak, he begins to understand “what it means to be a friend”.

Thistle Rose Young Artists
Shortly after the formation of Thistle Rose Academy of Arts, it became apparent that there was a legitimate need and desire in the community for a theatrical program aimed at youth. Keeping with the mission of Thistle Rose, a subdivision of the Academy was formed to meet this need—Thistle Rose Young Artists (TRYA.) The goals of this program are to offer quality, comprehensive instruction in technique, healthy vocals and legitimate theater practices. Rather than making money, the purpose of the group’s formation is to further enrich our community and promote these ideals.
