East English Village Preparatory Academy and Mann Learning Community in Detroit are closed this morning due to a teacher sick-out.

Detroit Public Schools officials released the following statement this morning: "Detroit Public Schools has no other choice but to close two schools this morning, East English Village Preparatory Academy and Mann Learning Community, because teachers from those schools have chosen not to come to work."

State Superintendent Brian Whiston also issued a statement Friday: “I understand that teachers in Detroit Public Schools have real concerns about the financial, academic, and structural future of their schools, but for the sakes of their students, they need to be in the classrooms teaching.  I am calling on teachers in Detroit public schools to end their systematic plans of not reporting to work, resulting in their schools being closed and students not being taught.  I will be calling a meeting of state and local stakeholders to sit down, discuss the issues, and finally put together a viable solution that will move education forward for the children in the city of Detroit.”

This week, a number of DPS schools had to close for the day due to teacher absences.
