3 DFD chiefs resign following firefighter injury

Posted

The City of Detroit declining to comment further today on the resignations of three top firefighters after an apparent lapse in supervision and the resulting injury of one of their own.

Sources tell Action News, Chief's Jack Wiley, Fred Hartman, and Anthony Ellis, all veterans of the Detroit Fire Department stepped down. Another Lt. suspended, following an investigation into the matter.

Action News first learned of the situation three days after the October 13th incident.

Engine 40 was participating in a mutual aid call in Highland Park. The crew supervisor had reportedly switched shifts with a rookie.

During the fire fight, a firefighter fell through a floor, his protective gear falling off. He sustained serious burns and had to be transported to the ICU.

Top brass was reportedly not notified of the injury for hours, and the injured firefighter not checked on in the hospital, all apparent violations of usual protocol.

Commissioner Eric Jones refused to do an interview today to answer further questions about changes in shift management as a result of this.

Action News learned in the wake of the incident, companies had to rotate shifts so fellow firefighters could visit the injured co-worker, taking away from their other duties.
