It is a turbulent road for students in the metro area who are striving to get through high school - most days just struggling to figure out where to sleep and have a meal.

With the help of United Way's High School Turnaround Initiative, kids are getting the help they need. Since 2009 it is an effort to transform schools and ensure students stay and graduate.

The GM Foundation linked arms with United Way, pledging nearly $30 million over five years to help seven metro Detroit high schools. There have been many success stories.

If you'd like to help kids in difficult situations like this, you can. You can volunteer at any Detroit area high school, be a mentor, lend a hand to help rebuild local schools, or donate.

For every dollar that is donated to the United Way's initiative, the GM Foundation will match your donation dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000.
