Summer programs are in full swing and vital to lives of so many kids throughout Metro Detroit.
Camp Oz is a summer program that inspires and provides growth for kids in Detroit.
“Mr. Ken Brown is amazing, the way he impacts these children every single day,” Kerrie Mitchell said.
For so many kids in Detroit, summer in the Osborn neighborhood means fun days at Camp OZ.

That’s road Brown tries to lead campers down.
“We learn, we have gym time and then we come back down, we have math and reading,” Camper Malik Hunt said.
Using the summer to grow in academics and athletics and bringing in inspirational speakers from police officers to rappers.
“Showing that people care, that there’s a safe place in a dangerous zip code- 48205,” he said.
The campers say Mr. Brown is a father figure.
“I think consistency is the one part that helps change,” Brown said.
And it’s change they see here as the campers return each year with many returning as camp counselors themselves or just to say thank you to Mr. Brown for all he’s done.
“Thank you Mr. Brown for being there for half my life – you’re a father figure,” Counselor Jayvion Spencer said.
