(WXYZ) — Actor Luke Perry has been hospitalized. The star, known for the character he played on Beverly Hills 90210, is reported to have suffered a stroke.

According to the reports, the Los Angeles Fire Department sent an ambulance to Luke Perry’s residence, after they got a call regarding someone having a stroke. Now Luke Perry’s publicist has not confirmed he’s actually had a stroke but has reportedly said that Mr. Perry is under observation at a hospital.

Anyone at any age can have a stroke. But it does happen more often in folks who are 55 years of age and older.

Now there are a lot of other factors that can raise your risk, like having a family history of stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, smoking and heart disease. Also men in general typically have a higher risk of stroke compared to women, and they are more likely to have them at younger ages.

Unfortunately, I am very familiar with how stroke can affect not only the person but their loved ones as well. My late father suffered a stroke, and it changed his life and my family’s life forever.

Now, when you have a stroke, what happens, is that the blood supply that goes to your brain gets interrupted or cut off. And blood carries oxygen. And without oxygen, your brain cells start to die.

So having a stroke is a medical emergency. It needs to be treated immediately as every minute counts.

Now the type of symptoms people get depends on the type of stroke they have. And how severe the symptoms are, and how long they last will also vary. But people can suffer from issues like paralysis, loss of muscle movement, memory loss and difficulty talking or thinking.

But the good news is that fewer Americans are now dying of a stroke. And while some folks may have long-term or life-long disabilities, others will recover fully.
