Students at the University of Michigan have gained national attention for creating a guide called, "Being Not-Rich at UM."
The guide, which is a shareable Google Document, was created by students aiming to provide honest information "about the barriers lower income and first-gen students face on this campus."
Students can find tips on navigating Financial Aid, employment, on- and off-campus housing, or even how they can save money on textbooks.
"So you've been admitted to the University of Michigan," the guide starts off.
"All your life, you’ve worked hard and gotten stellar grades. This is finally the light at end of the tunnel — a vehicle for upward mobility and financial security. You never have to worry about money again. And then… you get here, and you realize that your socioeconomic status puts you at a significant disadvantage."
Since the release of the guide, University of Texas at Austin students have launched their own guide.
