JACKSON, Mich. (WXYZ) — In preparation for Hurricane Dorian, which is expected to hit Florida's east coast late this weekend or early Monday morning, Consumer's Energy and DTE Energy are sending crews down to Florida.
According to Consumers, they are sending more than 60 crews to work with Florida Power & Light.
They are sending 15 three-person lineworker crews, three electric service workers, several field leaders and other support personnel and equipment.
Consumers said they are expected to leave for Florida this weekend and may remain there for up to three weeks.
Florida power & Light made the crew request via a collection of regional mutual assistance networks, and Consumers is part of the Great Lakes Mutual Assistance organization.
“In July, crews from six states assisted us as we restored power to more than 220,000 of our Consumers Energy customers,” said Guy Packard, the company’s vice president of electric operations. “Now it’s our turn to help others in their time of need.”
DTE is sending 130 contract linemen and nearly 80 tree trimmers to Florida as well, and they are on standby to send more people if they need it.
After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, DTE sent crews to Florida and Puerto Rico.
