FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Melissa Krause spent Monday morning loading up her SUV with groceries and doing what she's done for five years for seniors unable to get out on their own. However, when COVID-19 hit, the Affordable Homecare employee and her employer noticed the need seemed to grow exponentially.
Client care coordinator Brianne Zieniewicz says the Farmington Hills-based company is all about keeping seniors safe at home by helping them with personal care, transportation, companionship, and running errands.
"Everybody in the middle of a crisis just wants some way to help. So what happened initially was our own clients started calling us asking if we could go pick up their groceries because they were afraid to go to the grocery store," Zieniewicz said.
She explained, "We started by picking up groceries and going to the pharmacy for our clients, and we realized there must be a lot of people in the same boat really struggling to get food on the table."
So starting today, Affordable Homecare opened up their grocery delivery service to vulnerable seniors who are non-clients in Oakland County. Zieniewicz says they're trying to make everyone feel as comfortable and at-ease as they can. Seniors pay for their groceries, but delivery is free.
"That's the last thing we want anybody to have to worry about during a crisis is worry where their next meal is going to come from," she said.
"We haven't turned anybody down. So, Melissa our head caregiver, she's been out there, gosh, til 8, 9 [p.m.] at night doing deliveries. So, it doesn't matter. We delivery 'em until they can't be delivered anymore," Zieniewicz said.
