It's a growing epidemic claiming lives right here in metro Detroit.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Detroit police are partnering to help save lives by offering communities the opportunity to drop off their expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for Take Back Day, Saturday, April 28.
DEA Detroit Special Agent Timothy Plancon has spent his career fighting the use of illegal drugs. At a time when opioid abuse is happening at a staggering rate, he says it's more important now more than ever to be proactive in tackling the problem.
On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Detroit's 4th Precinct at 4700 W Fort St. will have boxes available for the community to stop by and drop off prescription drugs. The same boxes will be available at police stations across metro Detroit.
In the past 14 events, over the past eight year, the DEA has collected more than 9 million pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications and safely disposed of them.
