Sophomores at Benjamin Carson High School in Detroit have been writing and editing poems, essays and short stories with one goal in mind: to become published authors. And their English teacher, Shannon Waite, is making it happen.
"It's huge. When I was in high school, I would've loved to be published," says Waite.
"I think it would be fantastic to know that my ideas actually got out here and I was able to express myself and people can now see it," says 16-year-old Shai'Quan Ayers.
The book will consist of 30 different pieces of literature about freedom and is to be published at Pages Bookshop in Detroit in June.
"It's really awesome. It gives them an authentic audience so they're not just writing things to turn in to me. They're writing it for an actual audience that's going to be reading it and purchasing it so it's really exciting," says Waite.
The launch part for the book is June 12 at 2 p.m. at Pages Bookshop, 19560 Grand River, Detroit.
Ms. Waite is hoping for donations so she can reward her students with a book of their own.
