DTE Energy is raising electric rates in Michigan effective today.

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved the increase last Friday.

The average DTE Energy customer will pay about $8.22 more each month as a result of the increase.

DTE Energy had originally asked the MPSC for a rate increase totalling $370 million annually. The increase approved by the MPSC will result in an annual increase of $238.2 million.

"Customers will benefit from improvements in the reliability and safety of DTE Electric Company's electric distribution system and the acquisition of two natural gas-fired plants to generate electricity," MPSC Chairman John D. Quackenbush said.

He went on to say the increase will result in a more reliable system and a cleaner environment.
