ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) — If you're looking to surprise someone at the airport and don't want to wait behind TSA, now is your chance. Starting Tuesday, Oct. 22, Detroit Metro Airport will begin allowing non-ticketed visitors to the post-security side of the McNamara and North terminals.
It's part of the airport's "DTW Destination Pass" program, and comes after the TSA last year amended its regulations and gave airports more flexibility when allowing non-ticketed visitors into the gate area.
“The new regulations allow us to expand our gate pass program that already exists for our Westin hotel guests,” said Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton. “Now we can welcome more community members into our home to create memorable moments—from watching planes to greeting family and friends.”
The program is in a pilot phase and is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Those who want to try it must apply for a pass through the airport's website the day before the planned visit.
Applicants will get an email if they are approved, and detailed instructions on what to do.
It will be limited to 75 visitor passes per day and is expected to end on Jan. 5, 2020. People must go through the same TSA security screenings as passengers who board an aircraft.
