Eight ducklings were rescued from a storm drain in Clinton Township and it's all thanks to some animal lovers being at the right place at the right time.

It happened Tuesday night at the intersection of North Rose St. and Dunham Rd.

The mother duck was panicking, quacking on the road, when someone passing by saw her and pulled over.

The ducks could not have asked for better heroes.

Mark Williams helped them.

"We seen the mom duck running around going crazy," he said. "We heard the babies and I knew they were in the grate so we pulled over and we tried getting them out."

Michelle Heyza is with Rejoyceful Animal Rescue and was driving by when she saw the commotion and pulled over.

"Mom duck running around and turned myself around because I'm like, 'uh-oh' I think some babies may have wandered into the storm drain," she said. "Well I'm with an animal rescue, you have the right person drive past you."

The mother duck was on the road when it was hit by a truck, although injured, it was able to still waddle about.

Williams said, "Trying to get her out of the road and a truck went by and got her."

Mark didn't know what to do about the stuck ducks, he took matters into his own hands.

"And I jumped down there and took them out and there was still one stuck down there," he added.

"Called the chief animal control officer and he said, 'I have someone en route and we will be there shortly," explained Heyza.

All eight ducklings were saved.

Three waddled off with the mother duck, while the rest were taken to a wildlife vet.

So, why go through all that trouble for ducks?

That's an obvious answer for animal lovers, but Heyza says it also turns into a public safety issue.

"Even a duck being in traffic, running around crazy because it's babies are down there, if someone swerves to miss that duck they can hit another car and that can ricochet to a big accident."

Williams added, "You get that feeling that it's the right thing to do and that's when it's time to take action."

Animal control has been trying to find the mother duck and her three ducklings to treat her injuries.

Rejoyceful Animal Rescue is in need of donations for the five ducklings' vet bill.
